There are three main types of tumble dryers that are found in British homes – all valuable assets in a wet climate that makes it difficult to get the laundry out to dry.

Vented tumble dryers are the cheapest to buy. They need a wide diameter flexible venting hose that has to be fed through a window or purpose-made hole in an exterior wall in order for the hot, moist air to be pumped out.
Condenser tumble dryers collect the moisture expelled from the laundry while drying in a water reservoir which needs to be emptied after each load.
Heat pump tumble dryers are the most energy efficient and most expensive. They separate water from the warm air inside the drum as the laundry dries. The water goes into a tank, and the warm air is re-cycled, pumped back into the drum, drying the clothes faster.

All you have to do is give some thought and consideration to where you are going to position your tumble dryer, and in that respect we have some tips to share:

All tumble dryers need to be placed in a space that leaves enough room between the casing and the walls and cabinetry to allow for good ventilation and the dissipation of heat. Just a gap of a few inches will do.
It’s better not to place a tumble dryer alongside a fridge or freezer, because these appliances will have to work harder in the heated air around the dryer when it is operating.
It’s advisable to install a tumble dryer close to a window, in a well-ventilated room, because they emit hot, moist air which can cause a build-up of damp and condensation.
Avoid keeping a tumble dryer in an unheated outbuilding or garage because any water residue in the dryer might freeze during winter, causing damage to the machine.
You can’t put a tumble dryer directly on top of a washing machine because it will be unstable, but it is possible to obtain a suitable stacking kit if you need to do this to save space.
