What’s involved in installing a washing machine?

If you thought installing a new washing machine is a simple task, then consider what’s involved:

The packaging has to be removed, along with the transport bolts that hold the drum in place during transit.
The drain hose needs fastening in place (usually by means of a metal clamp).
The waste water drain hose needs to be placed in the standpipe provided for the purpose, after making sure that the drain is clear and not clogged up from previous use.
If the washing machine is to share a drain exit pipe with an adjacent dishwasher, this must be carefully accommodated and checked.
The water hoses must be secured to the taps (hot and cold if provided for, or cold only) and then cleared (run water through the hoses into a bucket) before being coupled to the water inlets using flat washers.
Once the machine is in position it must be made level by adjusting the feet, or it will vibrate, rock, walk, leak, refuse to spin or develop a variety of other malfunctions. Levelling can be especially tricky with integrated washing machines.
Turn on the water supply and check for leaks or seepage.
Finally, the power cord can be plugged in to a proper wall socket (don’t use an extension lead). The machine is then turned on, and a test wash cycle is run to make sure the machine is working as it should.
