An extractor hood (also known as a cooker hood) is an often neglected feature in the kitchen, even though it is rather obvious, installed as it is over the hob. When your extractor hood stops working, it is tempting to put off having it fixed.

It’s one of those things that takes a backseat on the “to do” list because, after all, an inoperable extractor hood doesn’t impact on your ability to cook or carry on the daily round in your kitchen, particularly if there is some other form of ventilation serving the room as well.

Kitchen ventilation is a requirement under UK building regulations for new builds and kitchen extensions, but whether you have an extractor fan or some other ventilation device to provide such ventilation, is optional. If you have an extractor hood in place already, it really should be in working order, or you will soon suffer the consequences e.g. a kitchen pervaded with unpleasant odours, fumes and unclean, humid air.

Common Problems with Extractor Hoods

The good news is that because extractor hoods are relatively simple devices there isn’t much that can go wrong with them, as long as you clean the filter regularly.

It is also unlikely that an extractor hood will begin to fail by increments. It will either work, or it won’t, with no in-between stage when it will show signs or symptoms of failing. An extractor hood that stops working, or is excessively noisy when running, probably needs a new motor.

If you suspect that your extractor hood is not extracting as much air as it should, you can check the exit vent on the outside of the building to make sure it hasn’t become blocked in some way.

Another common problem with extractor hoods is the failure of the lights, which are usually integrated into the appliance. We’ll check the wiring and if necessary, replace the light assembly and/or bulbs.
