Kitchen ventilation is a requirement under UK building regulations for new builds and kitchen extensions, but whether you have an extractor fan or some other ventilation device to provide such ventilation, is optional. The good news is that because extractor hoods are relatively simple devices there isn’t much that can go wrong with them, as long as you clean the filter regularly.
It is also unlikely that an extractor hood will begin to fail by increments. It will either work, or it won’t, with no in-between stage when it will show signs or symptoms of failing. An extractor hood that stops working, or is excessively noisy when running, probably needs a new motor.
If you suspect that your extractor hood is not extracting as much air as it should, you can check the exit vent on the outside of the building to make sure it hasn’t become blocked in some way.
Another common problem with extractor hoods is the failure of the lights, which are usually integrated into the appliance. We’ll check the wiring and if necessary, replace the light assembly and/or bulbs.
